Abstract

Acute rupture of an atherosclerotic plaque exposes thrombogenic structures of the vascular wall. Platelets in the circulating blood adhere to the injured vascular wall, are activated, and release thrombogenic signals. Thereby more and more platelets are recruited into the thrombus. In the most serious cases, this rapidly growing thrombus occludes the blood vessel and initiates a sequence of events resulting in irreversible injury of the tissue.
