In this chapter, various approaches to enhance existing factories with flexible CAD/CAM/CIM tools and concepts are discussed from various points of view. The first paper is concerned with the transformation of existing enterprises into an integrated, though decentralized, manufacturing system, capable of reacting quickly to market demands — the difficult but necessary task to undertake in the authors’ country. The second paper discusses concept, selection criteria and implementation problems of a Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) for precision engineering components. The third paper presents results of a survey of successful U.S. manufacturers on their methods of strategic planning for Computer-Integrated Manufacturing (CIM).
