Biological Effects of Dietary Restriction

Part of the book series: ILSI Monographs ((ILSI MONOGRAPHS))

Abstract

Various types of dietary restriction imposed on weanling or middle-aged rodents have been demonstrated to increase maximum longevity (McCay et al. 1935; Ross 1961; Weindruch and Walford 1982; Yu et al. 1982), to reduce the incidence and/or delay the onset of several spontaneous and induced neoplasms (Carrol 1975; Leung et al. 1983; Maeda et al. 1985; Rao et al. 1987; Ross and Bras 1965, 1971; Sylvester et al. 1982; Tannenbaum 1942; Weindruch et al. 1986; Weindruch and Walford 1982; Yu et al. 1982), and have been established as an important factor influencing the effects of aging (Bertrand 1983; Barrows and Kokkonen 1977; Masoro 1985; Weindruch 1984). So overwhelming is the data, Pariza and Boutwell (1987) have concluded that overnutrition could be directly correlated to an increased risk of cancer, although they were unsure of the mechanism(s) responsible.
