Abstract
During the six-odd decades in which reduced dietary intake has been established as the only definitive intervention for extension of maximum life span in mammals, two burning questions have persisted. First, what is the mechanism responsible for the life-prolongation effect, and second, can this effect be achieved in humans (or for that matter, any animal higher on the evolutionary scale than rodents)?
