Measurement of the Neutron Total Cross Sections for Bi and Pb: Estimate of the Electric Polarizability of the Neutron

Abstract

The neutron total cross sections are measured with an accuracy △σ/σ ∼ 10−3 for Bi and Si in energy range from 1 eV to 100 eV and for 208Pb and C in the range from 1 eV to 10 keV using the time-off-light facility GNEIS in Gatchina. An estimated value of the neutron electric polarizability is αn=(2.6±1.4)·10−3 fm3.
