Abstract

The ‘Design and Build’ section of the NATO Advanced Study Institute showed the benefit of multi-disciplinary collaboration in solving an under-specified problem using the Helical Approach. The results of a day’s work by two multi-disciplinary teams were both interesting and novel — the approaches differed as the groups were free to set their own agendas; they also reflected the diverse interests and enthusiasms of the groups. Observing the groups in action, it became clear that facilitators were important in developing cohesion and direction in the groups even though as individuals they did not have any special expertise in the problem domain covered.
