Abstract

The incidence and prevalence of malaria is rapidly increasing. Approximately 270–450 million new cases of malaria per year develop world-wide. Malaria causes an estimated 1.5–2.5 million deaths per year — one death every 30 seconds (Sturchler 1989; Nakajima 1992). The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the direct and indirect costs of malaria in 1995 for sub-Saharan Africa alone will exceed $1.8 billion (Nakajima 1992). This problem is compounded by escalating insecticide resistance among mosquitos and drug resistance among the parasites coupled with the toxicity and relative inefficiency of many of the alternative drugs.
