Desktop publishing provided (or at least promised) great improvements in productivity and accessibility for many users. The issues that will decide whether a desktop publishing system will deliver expected results, or whether a more sophisticated professional publishing system will do so, are discussed. A checklist for evaluating the effectiveness of these tools is provided.
