Abstract
This is a brief tutorial on epistemology and its relevance to systems design. First, I will sketch what epistemology is and how it relates to the task of designing systems. Then I caricature six contrasting epistemological positions, both professional and “common sense” based, to show how differences of epistemological orientation may critically affect design.
