Overview

The elementary components of digital circuitsare gates. They are composed of transistors as electrically active elements. Here we review those properties of transistors which are relevant for the understanding of their function within gates. The two most frequently used kinds of transistors are the bipolar and the field effect transistors, The former are the basis of transistor-transistor logic (TTL), the latter of metal-oxide-semiconductor technology, which is predominant in highly integrated components. Although the behavior of the two types of transistors is essentially the same, they differ in certain properties.
