Abstract

Lung cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers in the world and a leading cause of cancer death both in men and women. Thus, it is a major health problem with 180 000 new cases in the United States in 1996. Men are five times more affected than women due to the different smoking habits [29, 42]. In men 90% and in women 30-60% of all lung cancers are attributed to cigarette smoking. The proportion of smoking women is continuously increasing; thus, in the United States lung cancer has surpassed breast carcinoma as the leading cause of cancer death in women in the late 1980s [29]. Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is the most rapidly increasing cell type in women [42]. Occupational exposure to carcinogens also has a role although smaller in carcinoma induction. There is no significant correlation between lung cancer and residential radon nor air pollution exposure [29, 42].
