Abstract
Since the iron curtain was lifted, the question of whether Budapest could become the centre of the region has often been raised. Realistic politicians and experts consider the Hungarian capital the future financial centre of Central and Eastern Europe, while those who are overly optimistic regard Budapest as the future economic organiser in the region. The arguments supporting these new roles can be divided into three groups:
-
In Central and Eastern Europe an economic vacuum was created after the iron curtain was lifted.
-
Budapest was a significant regional economic organiser in the last third of the 19th century.
-
Globalisation processes in the first decades of the 21st century will make it possible for Budapest to assume an economic organising role in Central and Eastern Europe.
