Zusammenfassung
Im Rahmen der Evolution hat der Mensch zwei Formen von Abwehrmechanismen entwickelt. Zum einen die angeborenen Abwehrmechanismen („innate immunity“), die in der Regel bei Säugetieren aber auch bei Amphibien (zum Beispiel Fröschen) oder bei Pflanzen vorhanden sind. Diese Mechanismen sind also über die gesamte Entwicklungszeit aufgrund ihrer wesentlichen Bedeutung für das Überleben einer Spezies erhalten geblieben, verfügen jedoch nicht über die Möglichkeit, sich den verschiedenen Umweltgegebenheiten anzupassen. Zu diesen Mechanismen zählen unter anderem das Komplementsystem, und die sogenannten Defensine sowie auf zellulärer Ebene die Fähigkeit von polynukleären Neutrophilen Bakterien zu beseitigen.
