Abstract
From the dawn of modern industrialization, concentration and deconcentration of production have both had their effects on the spatial-economic landscape (Scott 1988). This applies to both urban systems (Van den Berg 1985) and port systems. While in the past, storage and distribution of maritime goods flows took place on or near the quays of a seaport, today these activities are often located at a considerable distance from the waterfront. Secondary centres arise around major seaports, resulting in port networks (Van Klink 1995). The process of deconcentration stems from diseconomies of scale in the ports combined with the changing location requirements of port-related activities and better accessibility of inland locations.
