Zusammenfassung

Nebenwirkungen der EKT sind vertretbar selten, meist nicht schwerwiegend, von kurzer Dauer und insgesamt tolerabel, insbesondere wenn man den Schweregrad der die EKT notwendig machenden Symptome wie z.B. Suizidalität berücksichtigt. Es wird davon ausgegangen, dass Morbidität und Mortalität unter der EKT niedriger sind als unter einem Teil der antidepressiven medikamentösen Behandlung (Olfson et al. 1998; APA 2001). So sahen z.B. Zielinski et al. (1993) in einer Gruppe von 40 schwer depressiven Patienten mit vorbestehenden kardialen Erkrankungen unter einer EKT seltener kardiale Komplikationen als unter der Gabe von Trizyklika. Es gibt auch Belege dafür, dass die Mortalität bei mit einer EKT behandelten schwer depressiven Patienten im weiteren Verlauf niedriger ist als unter anderen Behandlungsformen, bedingt auch durch niedrigere Suizidraten (Avery und Winokur 1976, 1978; Philibert et al. 1995).
