Optimising the Common Path Interferometer: A Theoretical Framework

We have developed an analytical model for the design and optimisation of common path interferometers (CPIs). We describe the mathematical analysis in detail and show how its application to the optimisation of a range of different CPIs results in the development of a graphical framework to quantitatively characterise CPI performance. We can visualise the optimisation of the filtering parameters in terms of phase-space plots in which the peak visibility and irradiance for a given filtering element in a CPI can be determined.
