Two- and Three-Electron Atoms and Ions

Abstract

The He atom and its isoelectronic ions present the simplest example which illustrates the complications of many particle systems. Here we develop wave functions for these systems, perturbed and unperturbed wave functions, based on their general properties. In this we expect the asymptotic region where one of the electrons is far away, to be an important domain. We therefore analyse the the problem in two stages. We first consider a simple wave function which satisfies the leading asymptotic condition and analyse its implications. We then describe a wave function which incorporates the asymptotic condition when one of the electrons is far away, the coalescence condition when an electron is close to the nucleus, and the correlation condition when the two electrons are close to each other. We obtain the energies and polarizabilities of the two electron atom and ions in the ground state and also obtain the energies of some excited states. We then describe a three electron wave function for Li and its isoelectronic series, based on the two electron wave functions.
