Abstract

Chlamydia pneumoniae is an obligate intracellular bacterial pathogen and an important cause of respiratory tract infections in humans. Pneumonia and bronchitis are the most common clinical manifestations of C. pneumoniae infections. Approximately 10 % of cases of community-acquired pneumonia are associated with C. pneumoniae. In addition, there is growing evidence that the organism may playa role in atherogenesis, as several studies have demonstrated the presence of the organism in atherosclerotic lesions [8].
