Abstract
To diagnose C. pneumoniae, we have to use different strategies depending on the type of infection (acute or chronic). For diagnosing acute primary infection and acute re-infection useful diagnostic means are available. The best combination seems to be serology by MIF in combination with detection of C. pneumoniae in the respiratory tract by PCR and/or cell culture. Since C. pneumoniae can persist in the respiratory tract [1], serology can be used to distinguish between an acute and a persistent infection.
