Abstract
The development of the technique of intravenous feeding in 1968 was a breakthrough in medical care (Wilmore and Dudrick 1968). Since then, the use of specialized nutrition support has become a standard tool in the care of patients. Much has been learned about the appropriate and safe indications, use and administration of enteral and intravenous nutrition. This chapter addresses the safe preparation and administration of intravenous nutrition in critical care medicine so that treatment decisions optimize patient outcome, but do not compromise patient safety.
