TIPS: Portal Thrombosis

Portal Hypertension

Part of the book series: Medical Radiology ((Med Radiol Diagn Imaging))

Abstract

Thrombosis of the portal vein is a serious clinical event, though fortunately an infrequent one. It appears in isolated cases as an idiopathic condition, but mayaiso be associated with a large variety of diseases and may put the patient‘s life at risk. In patients with anormal liver, it is the first cause of portal hypertension (BELLI et al. 1989). It often does not produce acute symptoms because the thrombus forms gradually, entailing the development of abundant collateral circulation. The first event to take place is usually hemorrhage from varices, which is one of the complications of portal hypertension. In recent years, spectacular developments in liver transplant programs and advances in diagnostic and interventional radiology have opened up new possibilities in the management of portal thrombosis.
