Abstract

C-type protein kinases (PKCs) mediate a multitude of signal transduction pathways triggered by phospholipid hydrolysis. Diacylglycerol is the main activator of PKCs, in addition to the modulation by Ca2+ of conventional PKC isozymes. The hydrolysis of phosphatidylinositol biphosphate by its specific phosphodiesterase provides both activators diacylglycerol and Ca2+ since inositol triphosphate releases Ca2+ from an intracellular, non-mitochondrial, calcium pool.
