Der Zusammenfassung von Pick [398] ist zu entnehmen, dass Gaucher [156] 1882 in seiner „Thèse de Paris“ das „Epithélioma primitif de la rate“ als idiopathische Milzhypertrophie ohne Leukämie beschrieb. Schlagenhaufer [453] erkannte 1907 das Leiden als „Systemerkrankung des lymphatisch-hämatopoetischen Apparates“, evtl. durch den „Tuberkelbacillus“ verursacht, und Marchand [298] begründete zeitgleich die Auffassung, dass es Folge der „Einlagerung einer fremdartigen Substanz“ ist. Das Fehlen eines Glukozerebrosid-abbauenden Enzyms [54] bzw. eine reduzierte Aktivität der Glukozerebrosidase [385] wurden später als Ursache ermittelt.
