Abstract
The specific benefits of laparoscopic surgery over laparotomy have been well enumerated, and a laparoscopic approach is now considered the most suitable way of care for many surgical diseases. In recent years, laparoscopic surgery has been increasingly performed in patients with malignant diseases. Not long after the increasing use of the new technique for malignant tumors, reports of tumor recurrences at the laparoscopic port-sites appeared in the literature (Wexner and Cohen 1995; Vukasin et al. 1996). A recent review of the printed matter revealed an incidence of 1 – 2%; of recurrences in trocar wounds as well as laparoscopic and thoracoscopic incisions (Franklin et al. 1996; Lumley et al. 1996). Despite the numerous reports of this phenomenon, port-site recurrences have been poorly defined up to now (Reymond et al. 1998). To obtain data on the real incidence as well as to compare the information from prospective multicenter trials, a clear and distinct definition of port-site recurrences is absolutely necessary.
