Abstract

In 1926, the view was expressed that occlusion of the mesenteric vessels had to be regarded as one of those conditions in which the diagnosis is impossible, the prognosis hopeless, and treatment almost useless (Cokkinis 1926). This pessimism is still shared by many physicians more than 70 years later. Such an attitude results partly from the fact that the diagnosis of mesenteric ischemia is fraught with difficulty. Indeed, patients with mesenteric ischemia exhibit a wide spectrum of clinical symptoms, ranging from a relatively innocuous episode of mild abdominal pain to a full-blown abdominal catastrophe, depending on the duration, severity and location of the bowel ischemia. Therefore, there is a need for imaging techniques that will make the diagnosis of mesenteric ischemia more accurate. As a consequence of the increased availability and use of high-resolution spiral CT in patients with acute abdomen, data are now available about the technique of spiral CT and the results obtained with it, and on the indications for spiral CT in the diagnosis of mesenteric ischemia.
