Abstract
Recent refinements in spiral CT technology and parallel improvements in computer graphics hardware and software tools stimulated interest in nonconventional means of data visualization. One of the most revolutionary technologies of modern imaging is virtual endoscopy (VE). The first report on the technical feasibility of colon imaging with helical CT and virtual reality was published by Vining et al. (1994). This method uses high-resolution spiral CT scanning and sophisticated computerized rendering techniques to construct a three-dimensional model of different structures and organs that can be examined in various fashions, including flying through and around normal and pathologic anatomy. VE provides a realistic 3D surface view of the inner walls of hollow structures, simulating conventional endoscopy.
