Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to discuss the chemical biology and biomedical applications of monosaccharides, a special class of carbohydrates. Treating the subject according to such a definition must, of course, be rather artificial, since it is now well appreciated that most sugars perform their biological functions as monosaccharide building blocks in complex oligosaccharides and polysaccharides, and even more so since glycosides occur bound to various aglycones such as in the glycoconjugates linked to protein or lipid moieties as discussed elsewhere in this compendium. Nonetheless, monosaccharides do occur as important metabolic intermediates, as essential components of various body fluids, and as important biological recognition markers. In these capacities they enter into numerous interactions with specific membrane transporters, intracellular enzymes, and carbohydrate receptors, which define their chemical biology, and suggest the avenues for important biomedical implications.
