Therapeutic options for the management of angina pectoris in coronary artery disease have grown and improved impressively over the past 30 years. Scientific knowledge on the pathophysiologic characteristics of the underlying causes and mechanisms of myocardial ischemia has led to rational and well-documented therapeutic approaches. In addition to the three mainstays of its medical treatment (nitrates, β-blockers, and calcium antagonist), two direct revascularization procedures have been introduced and are now well-established: coronary artery bypass grafting and percutaneous transluminal angioplasty.
