Abstract

Somatic hybridizationby protoplast fusion provides plant breeders with the possibility of increasing genetic variability and overcoming sexual cross-incompatibihty of plants. Various somatic hybrid plants have been reported. However, within Gramineae, production of somatic hybrids has been hindered by the fact that the mesophyll protoplasts of these species are not totipotent.
