Future Directions for Research on the Physiology of Acupuncture

Clinical research provides a systematic approach for identifying conditions of disease and dysfunction that can be effectively treated by acupuncture; physiological research examines how acupuncture works. Several rationales support the need for these latter studies. Evidence of mechanism imparts credibility to clinical findings of acupuncture as a drug-free alternative for treating conditions involving pain, inflammation, and nausea. Understanding the mechanisms by which needling promotes healing enhances the acceptance of acupuncture in the West, particularly when changes are detected in cells or molecules related to neural, hormonal, immune, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and other biomedically defined systems. Biomedical correlates of acupuncture action, in turn, assist researchers in improving the design of trials testing the efficacy of acupuncture treatment.
