Abstract
Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus- 1 (HIV-I) has now been recognized for almost 2 decades. The World Health Organization estimated that, by early 1998, over 30 million people worldwide had been infected with this virus, and at least 11.7 million would have died as a result. The rampant spread of infection continues with nearly 16,000 new infections each day and, by the year 2000, the number of individuals affected will have increased to 40 million people (Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS World Health Organization report on the global HIV/AIDS epidemic. June 1998. UNAIDS and WHO, Geneva, 1998).
