Modeling Starbursts in Interacting Galaxies

Abstract

Dynamical modeling of colliding galaxies is often used to study the triggering mechanism and evolution of merger-driven starburst galaxies. Here I briefly discuss modeling techniques and results, and examine the robustness of predictions of inflow triggering and starburst properties. The properties of the models are then compared to observed interacting systems to determine the successes and failures of these dynamical models of starburst mergers. Finally, I present new data on a poststarburst “E+A” galaxy which may present difficulties for the standard picture of merger-induced starburst activity.
