Abstract

When Albert Einstein first described the theory of stimulated emission in 1917 [10], he probably could not imagine that it would take less than 45 years for the establishment of the frist functional laser system, a ruby red laser constructed by Maiman in 1960 [31]. Already 1 year later this laser was being used clinically to treat dermatologic and ophthalmologic disorders [5, 15, 16].
