Abstract
Hydrops fetalis is a nonspecific end stage of various fetal, placental and maternal diseases. It corresponds to excessive fluid accumulation in at least two fetal compartments, including the peritoneal, pleural and pericardial serous cavities, subcutaneous tissue, and placenta (Gembruch and Holzgreve 2001). Isolated fluid accumulation (pleural effusion, ascites, pericardial effusion) is usually not considered as hydrops even if it may be the first sign of it.
