Zusammenfassung
Maligne Lymphome (ML) treten überproportional häufig bei älteren Menschen auf, das mediane Erkrankungsalter liegt bei 65 Jahren, 66% aller Lymphompatienten sind älter als 65 Jahre, 35% der Fälle sind 70 Jahre und älter. Hinzu kommt, dass die ML die größten Zuwachsraten von allen Malignomen in Europa und Nordamerika zeigen. Nach Daten des „Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program“ des National Cancer Institute stieg die Inzidenzrate seit den frühen 70er Jahren jährlich um 4% bei Männern und 3% bei Frauen, insgesamt um fast 60% auf zuletzt 13,7/100.000 Einwohner/Jahr. Epidemiologische Studien lassen einen kausalen Zusammenhang mit bestimmten Umweltfaktoren (Medikamente, Pestizide, Lösungsmittel, Holz- und Baumwollstaubpartikel, Haarfärbemittel, Nikotin, Nitrate) vermuten. Die größte Inzidenzsteigerung der ML zeigte sich wiederum bei älteren Menschen, beispielsweise bei weißen Männern ≥75 Jahre um 300–400% seit den frühen 70er Jahren (Weisenburger 1994).
