Abstract
The correlation of clinical findings with pathology forms the basis of our current knowledge of the nature and natural history of diseases. Investigative and experimental pathology burgeoned as clinico-pathological correlations facilitated the understanding of etiological and pathogenetic mechanisms. Despite the recent decline in autopsies, the necessity of basing all clinical and epidemiological studies on sound pathological knowledge continues. Therefore, this chapter aims to critically analyze current and new pathological knowledge and pathogenetic mechanisms, and to provide an integrated overview of vascular pathology with emphasis on atherosclerosis.
