Abstract
Thioredoxin (TRX) is a redox protein with proliferative, anti-apoptotic and co-cytokine functions. The physiologic role of TRX in normal T lymphocytes is poorly understood. Here we show that TRX is overexpressed in intestinal lamina propria T lymphocytes (LP-T) constitutively and after stimulation via CD2 as compared to peripheral blood Tcells (PB-T). We provide evidence that TRX may contribute to two major functional characteristics of LP-T; (a) resistence of cytokine production to immunosuppression by ciclosporin A and (b) high level production of IL-2 after experimental CD2 Stimulation as compared to PB-T. Therefore, overexpression of TRX in Crohn‘s disease, as demonstrated by immunohistochemical staining, may have major implications for our pathophysiologic understanding of inflammatory bowel disease.
