Abstract
The 10th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) is intended to be used in all German medical units since 1.1.2000. Because former patient records have been stored with diagnosis codes of the 9th revision (ICD-9), the problem of a mixed-standard database arises for a long term registry like the Population based Cancer Registry Bavaria. Validated conversion tables are existing ((1996)), but due to structure incompatibilities between ICD-9 and ICD-10 it is not possible to find a unique match for each entry of the catalogs. For time series analysis it is necessary to get consistent coding over all records without the break between the 9th and 10th revision. We examined the results of an automatic conversion routine included in the registry’s database. Using additional information from the complete cancer record like morphology and topography allows to find a conversion decision for problematic codes. With this method we were able to convert all diagnoses codes of an empiric sample of 1719 ICD-9 codes.
