Abstract

Our goals in this chapter are to describe the normal and main variations of the anatomy of the liver and biliary tract on various imaging modalities and to discuss the anatomic findings that may be clinically and surgically relevant. Currently, a major role of liver imaging in the evaluation of hepatic tumors is to assist surgeons in the preoperative determination of the feasibility of hepatic resections (Mukai et al. 1987a,b; Turner et al. 1990; Gazelle and Haaga 1992). The segmental location of tumors is useful for preoperative planning of the type of resection (Nelson et al. 1990; Sugarbaker 1990; Soyer et al. 1991). Identification of key vascular landmarks often helps to determine the actual segmental location and extent of focal liver lesions. Knowledge of anatomic variations before surgical or percutaneous interven- tional procedures can prevent traumatic injuries (Van Beers et al. 1994). Preoperative imaging can also determine the presurgical and estimated postre- section hepatic volumes and influence surgical decisions (Bismuth et al. 1982; Turner et al. 1990; Soyer et al. 1992).
