Remote Sensing of Subglacial Eruptions in Iceland and the Development of Related Warning Systems

  • Chapter
Early Warning Systems for Natural Disaster Reduction

Abstract

The 1996 subglacial eruptions in Iceland and possible future events in the neovolcanic zone serve as a case in point to emphasise the need to evolve effective methods using SAR techniques for the observation of natural disasters and assessment of the magnitude of their impact. Main research objectives are the monitoring, using ERS-1/2 SAR, JERS-1/SAR and RADARSAT data, of surface deformations caused by magmatic movements, the observation of glacier dynamics and their relation to subglacial volcanism, and the surveillance of areas threatened by meltwater drainage following subglacial eruptions. Verification of the results by ground truth involves the determination of geologic-hydrogeologic, geomorphologic, glaciologic and geodetic studies. The ultimate goal is the establishment of an operational longterm monitoring service in cooperation with Icelandic institutions to be employed for risk assessment, early prediction and damage mitigation.
