We now proceed to recent developments in the theory. The von Neumann theory of Carleman operators was developed for hermitean (A = A*) operators; some aspects of this theory can be generalized to normal operators (AA* = A*A) and even more general operators. We simply define a Carleman operator by (6.13) without demanding hermiticity or normality. Some results will be specific far normal operators.
