Zu den „Wundern der Natur“ zählten seit alters her elektrische Fische, Welsarten und Zitterrochen, die mit besonderen, aus Muskeln oder Nerven entstandenen, elektrischen Organen Spannungspulse entladen können. Die Entladungen von bis zu 350 V sind wirksame Abwehrwaffen, eignen sich aber auch zum Betäuben von Beutefischen.
