Contaminant Release and Carbonate Availability of Sulphide-Bearing Waste Rock derived from Long-term Column Tests

Abstract

With a view of gaining further knowledge on contaminant release and long-term availability of carbonate waste rock constituents, 11 column tests are ongoing at the Ronneburg site following completion of a comprehensive waste rock pile characterisation program. These tests have been running for about 6 years now. Development of leachate pH is presented and the percentage availability of potential for neutralisation is assessed. Results to date show that for waste rock having a NP:AP ratio of >2 the available potential for neutralisation is sufficient to maintain acid consuming conditions over a protracted test period.
