Abstract
During the International Workshop on Electron Correlations and Materials Properties, June 28–July 3, 1998, near Iraklion on Crete (the last meeting Mel attended before Walter received his Prize, and the only one whose beautiful poster we framed), I hung out with the spouses and friends. In our ample free time, we explored the capitol city or joined organized tours that left from Amoudara, our tourist beach outside Iraklion. We made a pilgrimage to the tomb of Kazantsakis, banished outside the city walls, and visited the Lassithi Plain (home to the Valley of the Windmills and the Dictean Cave, birthplace of Zeus), Gortys (the old Roman capitol of Crete), the caves at Matala, and the ruins of Phaistos on the Mesara Plain.
