Zusammenfassung

Dr. William Beaumont war Militärarzt im Dienst der Vereinigten Staaten und behandelte einen jungen Mann, Alexis St. Martin, der am 6. Juni 1822 mit einem Bauchschuss zu ihm gebracht wurde. Er rettete dem Patienten das Leben, der jedoch aufgrund der Verwundung zeitlebens eine Öffnung zum Magen, eine Magenfistel, behielt. Der interessierte Arzt begann die Physiologie und als der erste Psychophysiologe des gastrointestinalen Systems auch die Wirkung der „Leidenschaften“ auf die Verdauung zu untersuchen.
