Abstract

The kidneys are the principal funtional unit of the renal system. They remove the breakdown products of protein metabolism, electrolytes, water and many drugs and their metabolites. The kidneys also regulate the volume of extracellular fluid, the concentration of extracellular electrolytes, pH of the body fluids and the blood pressure. Other components of the renal system include the bladder, the ureters and the urethra.
