Zusammenfassung
Mais gehört heute zu den produktivsten Kulturpflanzen der Welt. Rund ein Drittel der gesamten Getreideproduktion sind Körnermais. Hinzu kommt sein Einsatz als Futtermittel (Silomais) in nördlicheren Gefilden, etwa bei uns in Deutschland, sowie die Nutzung als Energielieferant (Energiemais). Maisstärke ist auch ein wichtiges Ausgangsprodukt für Biokunststoffe, als Fermentationsrohstoff, etwa zur Zuckerherstellung, und für andere Stärkenutzungen. Als C4-Pflanze nutzt Mais die Sonnenenergie besser aus als die hiesigen Getreidearten. Neben seiner Produktivität überrascht Mais vor allem durch die Vielfalt seiner Erscheinungs- und Nutzungsformen. Ursprünglich aus Mittelamerika stammend verbreitete er sich schon ab dem 16. Jahrhundert in Europa. Die Italiener nutzten seine Produktivität als erste, später machten ihn die Türken zu ihrem Nationalgetreide und schließlich eroberte er die wärmeren Teile Europas. Heute wächst er von Sizilien bis Dänemark. Weltweit bestehen heute 35% der Maisernte aus gentechnisch-veränderten Sorten. Der Klimawandel wird in Deutschland den wärmeliebenden Mais zum Gewinner machen, solange eine gute Wasserversorgung gewährleistet ist.
