Abstract

The cruise industry has become a boom sector in the last decades. Indeed, it is the fastest growing segment of the leisure travel industry and continues to grow. This traffic has seen in recent years a dramatic increase in activity, particularly on the European side of the Atlantic. If during the 1980s the core operations of the cruise tourism industry was located almost exclusively in the area of the Caribbean – the American client being the main target – from the 1990s that market began to show signs of saturation, producing a corresponding increase in other geographical areas. Nowadays there are cruises to just about any place in the world, although the Caribbean remains the most popular destination.
