Polyuria is defined as a urine output of more than 30 ml/kg body weight/24 h. Thorough anamnesis and physical examination can reveal the underlying disease for polyuria. The first diagnostic step is to rule out uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. The next diagnostic step is to determine serum and urine electrolytes and serum and urine osmolality. By this means, the pathophysiologic differentiation between solute diuresis and water diuresis can be made.
