Dermatology Atlas for Skin of Color

Abstract

Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated, hyperproliferative disease of the skin with several presentations, which are similar across races and ethnicities. Prevalence is generally less in populations with skin of color. Genetic and environmental factors play leading roles in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. While clinical features, histopathology, and treatment are similar across ethnicities, lesions in darker colored skin frequently demonstrate thicker plaques, less erythema, and more violaceous and gray colors. This chapter will review the epidemiology, etiopathogenesis, clinical presentations, differential diagnoses, and treatment of psoriasis in patients with skin of color.
